Standby umpire / third appraiser services
When you and the opposing appraiser disagree on a totaled vehicle's actual cash value, both sides can jointly select SecondAppraisal as the neutral umpire / third appraiser. Becoming your documented umpire of record — confirmation, the signed selection agreement, document preservation, both-party access — is free.
A $248/side step-in fee applies only if both appraisers ask us to render a written determination, and it is collected before valuation work begins. If the two of you settle first, we record an Affirmation of Settlement and nobody pays anything.

Valuation research & comps work-up for your own appraisals
A $199 B2B research package for appraisals you are writing yourself. We pull the comparable-market data, run the condition analysis, and hand you a draft valuation work-up with every input shown.
You review the inputs and decide what to do with them — adopt them, augment them with your own work, or reject them outright — then form and certify your own independent opinion. We supply the research; the appraisal and the professional judgment behind it stay yours.

How an umpire engagement works
- 1
Both appraisers agree to use us
You and the opposing appraiser jointly select SecondAppraisal as the neutral umpire. Each side confirms and signs the selection agreement. Nothing is charged.
- 2
Step in only if both sides ask
If the two of you can't agree, both appraisers request a written determination and the step-in fee is collected per side before valuation work begins. Settle first and nobody pays.
- 3
Neutral valuation and award
The umpire reviews comparable-market evidence and issues a signed appraisal award. Binding as to actual cash value where the policy's appraisal clause provides.
Umpire pricing shown: Free until needed. Fees are quoted per side and collected only as described above.
Why independent appraisers work with SecondAppraisal
Neutral by design
We represent neither the policyholder's appraiser nor the insurer's — only the evidence. A VIN-based conflict-of-interest check runs before we accept any umpire engagement.
Your certification, your call
Research inputs are delivered as a draft you adopt, augment, or reject. The appraisal and the professional judgment behind it are always yours.
Built for independents
No membership fee and no subscription. Each service is priced on its own, requested from your dashboard, and confirmed with you personally before any work starts.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the appraiser program for?+
Licensed independent auto appraisers who handle total-loss disputes and want a neutral umpire on standby, research inputs for the appraisals they write themselves, photos of vehicles they can't reach, and a place to trade customers they can't serve. There is no membership fee; each service is priced on its own.
What does it cost to name SecondAppraisal as umpire / third appraiser?+
Nothing to become the documented umpire of record — confirmation, the signed selection agreement, document preservation, and both-party access are free. A $248/side step-in fee applies only if both appraisers ask us to render a written determination, collected before valuation work begins. If the two appraisers settle first, we record an Affirmation of Settlement and nobody pays.
Is the valuation research package an appraisal?+
No. It is a $199 research package for appraisals you are writing yourself: comparable-market data, condition analysis, and a draft valuation work-up with every input shown. You review the inputs and adopt, augment, or reject them, then form and certify your own independent opinion. The appraisal and the professional judgment behind it are yours.
How is the research different from what you sell consumers?+
Consumers buy an Appraisal Research report or a full consultation in which we negotiate with their insurer. The appraiser package is inputs only — the same comparable-market research, delivered as a draft you finish under your own certification. We never contact the insurer or the customer on an appraiser-package engagement.
How does photo sourcing work?+
Request the vehicle from your dashboard with its location and what you need captured. We dispatch a photographer from our network, and the full image set lands in your dashboard when they upload. The price is $79 to you; set your own customer price for the service.
What is the customer trading desk?+
A two-way desk for customers you can't take on. Hand off a matter you can't serve — out of state, outside your licensing, or over capacity — and earn $49. Take on a customer we route to you for $99. When we match a hand-off to a buyer, SecondAppraisal keeps the $50 in between. Honor system, no upfront cost.
How do I request a service?+
Sign in to your appraiser dashboard and use the Services card. Every request is recorded on our side the moment you click — it does not depend on an email landing — and our team follows up personally to confirm scope and timing before any work or billing starts. There is no self-serve checkout yet.
Does SecondAppraisal take sides as umpire?+
No. As umpire / third appraiser we represent neither the policyholder's appraiser nor the insurer's — only the evidence. We run a VIN-based conflict-of-interest check before accepting an engagement, and a determination rests on comparable-market evidence, not on which side selected us.
